One of the popular destinations that tourists visiting Akron simply cannot miss is the Akron Art Museum. It features a wide variety of interesting art pieces from all over the world, but more than what’s inside, visitors are in awe with the majestic glass structure of the building itself, which has a rather interesting and bold architectural design when you walk through the atrium and see how the panels and the two buildings connect with each other.
The museum was initially called the Akron Art Institute when it was opened in 1922. Over the years, it has surpassed countless challenges, from lack of funding to building fires that diminished a substantial percentage of their collections. After the Second World War, the institute reopened. This time, they were able to hire professional staff instead of the volunteers they have worked for decades since its opening. That also paved way for the institute to focus their energy on fine arts and design.
Over the next couple of decades since it reopened, the school has transformed itself from an art school to an art center and then to a museum. As a museum, AAM focused on displaying art pieces produced from 1850 to the present. If you happen to be in the area, ask suggestions from the front desk personnel. They are quite knowledgeable and can give suggestions on where to start. Although the place is not significantly huge compared to most modern museums, the exhibits they feature are worth seeing and pieces are well laid out and evenly spaced. The place also has enough room to move, especially if happen to drop by on days when they are not too busy.
